Contracted to Charter Communications to assist the PDM (Production DataMart) team with managing the platforms, systems, software, data ingestion and monitoring of production and testing PDM environments.  Workedthe following projects while at Charter:

  • Improved the on-call experience through the reduction and elimination of redundant DataDog alerts by either reconfiguring existing monitor scripts and/or DataDog monitor, adding an additional monitor to handle the simple paging.
  • Reduced support overhead by automating redundant management/alerting tasks by creating Chef recipes (in Ruby and Bash) that consistently apply changes, or monitor for problems, across all supported systems.
  • Maintained system availability by assisting in the management of technologies including RedHat/CentOS 6/7/8, Hadoop, Elastic Search, ArcGIS, and Tableau.

Promoted to the Engineering team to manage the integration of the product’s Data Integration routines with the Hadoop ecosystem, as well as maintaining support for legacy GreenPlum environments.  Specific accomplishments include: 

  • Reduced the customer impact of critical product bugs and reduced support complexity by working closely with DevOps, Application Support, and QA to troubleshoot application/environment issues, and identify any required fixes for bugs or configuration issues, and scope/write tools and utilities for the groups to meet these goals. 
  • Created and maintained a Docker Swarm cluster to evaluate and automate the installation of Gluu Docker edition; wrote scripts and docker compose files to automate installation tasks 
  • Worked on a special team tasked with building/converting key parts of the application to Java/Spring Boot/Nginx microservices running under Docker and Kubernetes, as a proof of concept for the next generation of the application as well as investigating AWS/GCS. 
  • Integrated Okta authentication to various bash and perl tools to ensure secure execution of backend API calls; authored additional tools to create and automate application features not yet in the product. 
  • Assigned as Product Architect for Data Ingestion, part of the overall Architecture and Core Development Teams, in late ’15, to help provide leadership to the Engineering Team in the integration of Data Ingestion routines into CEA, product strategy, migration strategies, requirements/acceptance criteria, and technology assessments for inclusion with the product. 
  • Improved data ingestion by finding new and optimized methods for loading data into the application via technologies including Pig, Sqoop, HBase, Hive2 and Impala. 
  • Authored and maintained various bash, Perl and Java applications to streamline and augment the work of the QA, Data Services and Information Architect teams.


DevOps Engineer                                                                               February 2014 – January 2015

Assisted the DevOps and Engineering groups by providing support and help with Jenkins build jobs, maintaining the Oracle VM cluster and virtual machines, and providing server and desktop support.  Specific duties included:

  • Installed and maintained an 8 node Oracle VM cluster and its Windows and Linux VMs. 
  • Maintained  multiple Dev and QA Hadoop clusters (Hortonworks & Cloudera). 
  • Authored support scripts for the Data Services team to enhance the workflow of data audits/analysis using bash, Perl and R. 
  • Spearheaded the effort of migrating standalone PDI transformations to PDI Hadoop mapreduce jobs; created generic Java classes to convert data to JSON; identified steps necessary to migrate existing PDI transformations to integrate into the Hadoop framework.

  • Supported the development team by architecting, installing and configuring an on-premise grid platform of 15+ systems. 
  • Provided platform support by Installing and configuring VMware vCloud software; created/maintained virtual servers for grid/software testing. 
  • Created custom Perl and shell scripts to manage the startup, shutdown, and cache status across multiple grid nodes running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0, VMware’s GemFire cache software, and custom java code.
